Books I’m reading, often of the middle grade and young adult variety, and associated thoughts and gossip. Writing. My life in Portland, Oregon. Ridiculous new things I see at the grocery store.

More than monthly. Often in waves, as my “I’m going to post EVERY DAY!” enthusiasm ebbs and flows. I post briefer thoughts on Mastodon, https://pdx.social/@grrlpup .

My blog began on Livejournal, and still crossposts at Dreamwidth under the username grrlpup. This blog is hosted at the wonderful Block 81, a Portland company, and uses the Bosco WordPress theme. I would be grateful to know if you encounter any accessibility lapses.

  1. Hi Holly –
I’m a reporter at the Wall Street Journal. I know this is out of the blue but I was researching online for a story I’m doing and saw a fun Twitter post by you about starting the day “at work” with a walk around the block. I am writing a story about some of the ways we’re adding in a “commute” or doing some other separation to help with WFH lifestyle. I wonder if you might chat with me for a few minutes? I’m at Jennifer.Levitz@wsj.com or 617-416-1820.
    All the best,
    Jennifer

  2. Just stumbled on your blog looking for a photo of my grandmother, Emily Cheney Neville, as a child. I can confirm she’s from a wealthy family- the Cheneys of Manchester, CT, though she distanced herself from the trappings of wealth – usually in cut off corduroys and ratty sneakers. You can read about her childhood in the book Traveler from a Small Kingdom. No idea if she ever knew the author of Harriet the Spy. ??

  3. Hey Holly, this Ken. Haven’t been in touch for a long time. The big news on my end is that Dale and I are moving to Palm Springs in just over a month. Would you like to have lunch sometime with KFC, maybe even at a KFC?

  4. Hello from Barcelona and bon any nou!

Glad to see your part of Portland isn’t on fire. (Cannot, could not, do not believe the things the govt says about it — or anything else. Ave Mars, here we are courting WWIII again.) Stanley would love to be walking in that park.

We went back to 37th/Belmont before we moved to Spain and hardly recognized the place, though Murray Manor is still there, and still glorious. The streets of tents though. But mostly it was all the new 4-story infill apartment buildings that look pretty much the same.

    • happy new year to you guys and Stanley! :)

Woodstock neighborhood is also filling in with apartment buildings. Maybe I will sort of stop seeing them in a few years as they blend in more. Maybe there will somehow be enough that housing becomes affordable again! I just keep hoping Portland’s new city council does some good, someone manages to get some money flowing from the rich to the public instead of all the other way round, and in the meantime we can keep celebrating the quirky beauty that’s been here all along. fingers crossed anyway!
